Questions

Education loans, explained.

Do I need collateral for an education loan?

Not always. Unsecured loans are common up to roughly ₹40–50 lakh depending on the lender, the course and the co-applicant profile. Larger amounts usually need property or a fixed deposit as security, and secured loans generally carry lower rates.

When do repayments start?

Most education loans include a moratorium covering the course period plus six to twelve months. Interest may still accrue during that window, and some lenders offer a reduced rate if you service the interest while studying.

Can I claim tax benefit on an education loan?

Section 80E allows a deduction on the interest paid on an education loan, for up to eight years from when repayment begins. There is no cap on the deductible interest amount. Confirm your position with a tax adviser.

Can I apply before I have an admission letter?

You can start the process and get an indication of eligibility, but lenders sanction against a confirmed admission. Beginning early means the paperwork is ready when your offer arrives.
